DairyNZ encourages farmers to help typhoon appeal

Farmers are being encouraged to contribute to the Red Cross following the devastating typhoon in the Philipines.

Dairy NZ chairman John Luxton says about 8% of workers on dairy farms are Filipino, many of them in Canterbury and Southland, and he says the dairy industry wants to show its support and sympathy to them.

Mr Luxton says Filipinos are a highly valued part of New Zealand's rural workforce and farmers throughout the country are concerned for the welfare of their workers' and their families.

He says many of the Filipino workers come from the areas hard hit by by the typhoon and says they're finding it tough to get in contact with their families and friends back in Philipines.

"Both farmers and the wider public can help the Red Cross," says Mr Luxton.

He predicted that a lot of wages from Filipino workers in New Zealand will go to help storm victims and their families, but said farmers could also contribute.
