Guide for dairy farmers hiring migrant workers

6:45 am on 26 November 2013

Federated Farmers has recognised the increasing reliance on migrant workers in the dairy industry by producing a practical guide to help dairy farmers follow the right procedures and avoid the pitfalls of hiring overseas staff.

Federation dairy chair Willy Leferink said farmers are having to employ more migrant workers because there's a shortage of skilled local people to fill places on dairy farms.

He said the federation decided a guide was needed after calls to its help line showed farmers were running into a lot of problems trying to hire overseas people.

Mr Leferink said there's also a section outlining the services available to help get migrant workers settled.
