A Marlborough winemaker has beaten off competition from high country merino farmers, dairy and sheep and beef farmers to win the title of South Island Farmer of the Year 2013.
The winemaker is Peter Yealands from Yealands Family Wines.
The awards are run by the Lincoln University Foundation,and the judges said Mr Yealands impressed them with his philosophy of thinking boldly and never saying it can't be done.
They said his entry stood out for its innovation and vision.
He won $20,000 to put towards overseas travel for study and research.
