Arla joins global dairy trade auction

12:32 pm on 3 December 2013

Arla Foods will start selling British skimmed milk powder on Fonterra's fortnightly Global Dairy Trade this month.

It will the first time that a British dairy product has entered the auction.

The Scandanavian-based co-operative, which includes British dairy farmers, says it is taking this step to gain access to more lucrative markets such as China and the Middle East.

Arla says prices in those markets are about 5% higher than in Europe.

Growth potential in European markets continues to be under pressure, while the Asian markets are delivering higher returns.

Rabobank senior analyst Hayley Moynihan said Arla is one of the largest dairy companies in the world and its entry onto the GDT will add to the strength of the auction.

British skimmed milk powder will be offered from 17 December.
