Taupo soil erosion a concern for council

12:51 pm on 10 December 2013

The risks of soil erosion in the Taupo area have been highlighted by two major erosion incidents in the past week.

Heavy rain caused massive amounts of top soil to be washed away in the Pueto stream catchment and on a property near Aratiatia.

Waikato Regional Council area manager Anne McLeod says farmers need to do more to ensure erosion is not exacerbated by their farming techniques.

She says in one of the incidents, at Aratiatia, the farmer had just ploughed the land.

Ms McLeod says the regional council has extensive mapping and information about erosion prone areas, and those new to farming the area should seek information before doing major work.

But she says even experienced farmers can be caught out.

No rules appear to have been broken by the incidents but the regional council is talking to the property owners to make sure they are following industry best practice.
