Outlook generally bright for meat exporters

Meat companies have been cutting lamb payments to farmers in their weekly schedules.

But market analyst with NZX Agrifax Ivan Luketina says despite that, the outlook for lamb exports this season remains upbeat.

He says overseas indicator pricing remains firm and that provides exporters with confidence in the near term.

He says European markets are recovering and prices significantly higher than year ago and demand from China has been massive in the last few months although there are indications those volumes could flatten out.

In the beef trade, manufacturing beef prices in the main US market are holding, but Mr Luketina says a slightly weaker tone has crept into that market.

Meanwhile the boom in dairy commodity prices is continuing driven by some panic buying as people try to lock in supplies.
