Rain needed in parts of Northland

The Northland Rural Support Trust is keeping a close watch on parts of the region where farms are coming under increasing stress from the lack of rain.

The trust has asked for reports from its farmer contacts around the region and will be reviewing them when it meets on Thursday to see if it needs to take any action, such as help with grazing or feed.

Co-ordinator Julie Jonker said western areas of Northland were most in need of rain but had missed out so far.

"It's just been so patchy. You get some areas that are only a few kilometres away that will get rain and others that don't, and the biggest trouble these people are having is actually providing green feed for their stock," Ms Jonker said.

"They're looking for good-quality grazing, possibly there may be a requirement in the future for good-quality baleage as well."

Anyone with spare grazing should contact the trust, as it would be great to get the animals out of the dry areas, she said.
