An aged gouda made by Barry's Bay Traditional Cheese Company near Akaroa on Banks Peninsula has won the Champion of Champions title at the New Zealand cheese awards.

Its the first time the company has won the top award, although it has received gold medals in the past.

Mike Carey from Barry's Bay Cheese said there is a growing number of people in this country making speciality cheeses, as shown in the long-list of winners at the award ceremony.

Two other champion awards also went to Dutch-style cheeses.

Mr Carey said the Dutch influence in cheese making in New Zealand is strong.
