The Hawke's Bay is sending two representatives to the world sheep shearing and wool handling competition in May in Ireland.

In the New Zealand championships in Te Kuiti during the weekend, Rowland Smith and John Kirkpatrick sheared 20 sheep to take first and second place and secure their positions at the world champs.

Shearing legend David Fagan, the 52 year-old winner of five individual world titles, had to settle for fourth place.

A Taihape teacher and 2008 world woolhandling champion Sheree Alabaster won the New Zealand woolhandling title for a seventh time.
