Beef exports steady

It's been steady as she goes for the beef sector so far this season.

Beef and Lamb New Zealand's chief economist Andrew Burtt said the figures for the first half of the current season show 189,600 tonnes of beef and veal worth $1.1 billion have been exported.

He said those figures are very similar to the same period last season, but the destination for the beef is changing.

"The volumes have shifted from being a bit of decline in our traditional markets and some increase in some of other markets, particularly South Asian and Middle Eastern markets, which have offset the small declines in North America, North Asia and the European Union."

Exports to Indonesia increased fourfold in the first six months of the season and accounted for 4.7 percent of New Zealand beef and veal exports.
