Electronic trade cert goes live

4:19 pm on 9 July 2014

An electronic trade certification system the Government says will help prevent dairy product fraud has gone live.

Food Safety Minister Nikki Kaye says the new online system replaces the country's paper-based certification system.

Currently the new system applies to meat and seafood products, but dairy exports will also be covered from 1 September.

The Minister says the new system will be faster and easier for businesses to use and make it easier for foreign regulators to verify New Zealand's exports.

"We've worked very closely with overseas regulators before this system went live to ensure that we have that compatability and that they are absolutely able to access our systems.

"So this has been years of development but its really good news for industry and really good news for preventing issues like fraud in terms of food."
