The Minister of Agriculture has announced more funding to support irrigation.

David Carter told the Irrigation New Zealand conference in Christchurch that the Government is extending its Community Irrigation Fund, as well as its Sustainable Farming Farm.

He says the community fund is now able to provide assistance for schemes to help raise community and investor support.

The first to benefit is Central Plains Water which have more than $80,000 made available to it.

Mr Carter says the sustainable farming fund will also receive an extra $739,000 for irrigation-related projects, such as a guide for the development of water user groups.

He says this will help in developing irrigation that meets the needs of farmers, as well as recreational users, environmentalists and communities.
