A first-time exhibitor at the Asia Fruit Logistica trade event in Hong Kong, says being at the expo will pay dividends in the long run.

Kono Horticulture is part of Maori-owned Wakatu Incorporation that showcased its apples and pears at last week's event, which had about 460 exhibitors.

It was also pushing the Kono food basket grown in the Nelson region, including the wine and seafood arms of its operation there and a recent acquisition in fruit bars.

The New Zealand Pavilion featured 13 companies, seven of them there for the first time.

Kono general manager Ru Collin said it the event his company's product alongside competing countries such as Mexico, Chile, Peru, Argentina and Australia.

"I think it's going to generate more trade and I can see us getting more work and placing more fruit up into the Asian area, alongside understanding the whole market dynamic a lot better," he said.
