Pruning season underway

8:01 am on 16 May 2010

Tree pruning for next season and weed spraying are underway in apple and pear orchards in the Nelson/Motueka region.

The apples are now being packed for export and and any fruit that does not make the grade is going to the juice factory.

But some orchards are restructuring in preparation for next season.

Country Life reports some grape growers in Marlborough who are watching their bank balances, are choosing to prune themselves this year rather than employ contractors.

However, some growers in Gisborne are delaying pruning until they know the varieties that wine companies want for next year.

Country Life reports they don't want to incur unnecessary expense in case they end up ripping the vines out.
