Federated Farmers takes ETS campaign to Australia

Federated Farmers has taken its campaign against the emissions trading scheme to Australia.

President Don Nicolson has told an agriculture and greenhouse emissions conference of the Australian Farm Institute that the scheme will cost the New Zealand pastoral agriculture sector at least $87 million in its first year.

That's despite agriculture not being required to join the scheme until 2015.

Mr Nicolson says that initial cost will come from an estimated increase in fuel and power prices from July, when the energy and manufacturing sectors have to start paying for their greenhouse gas emissions.
