The head of Deer Industry New Zealand says the velvet industry has to change the way it operates.
Chief executive Mark O'Connor told an industry conference in Napier there are opportunities to increase poor returns for velvet, but sales and marketing have to be re-organised.
He said the industry needs to tap into New Zealand's clean, green image in its international marketing to differientiate itself as a modern young supplier of velvet.
