6:01 am on 17 June 2010

Zespri has announced plans to release three new varieties of kiwifruit for commercialisation this winter.

The exporter has been testing several new lines of kiwifruit and says it will release an early-season gold variety, as well a potentially long-storing gold and a new sweet green variety.

A total of 600-hectares will be licensed to be planted or grafted this season.

Zespri is also starting on-orchard grower trials for a further two new varieties, which are both red.

Growers will receive detailed information on the new varieties early next week.
