ETS criticised at farmers' conference

2:09 pm on 24 June 2010

The Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS) has come under fire at the National Federated Farmers Conference which began in Invercargill on Thursday.

The lobby group is fiercely opposed to the ETS which comes into effect on 1 July, saying it will cost farmers and the economy too much.

Labour leader Phil Goff told the conference the ETS is not the way to reduce emissions, but warns that stopping the scheme will be costly.

Mr Goff says the country needs to focus more on reducing emissions rather than taxing them.
