Updated welfare code for sheep and beef cattle

6:01 am on 28 June 2010

The Minister of Agriculture has issued the latest in an updated series of animal welfare codes, this one covering sheep and beef cattle.

It outlines standards of care that include stockmanship and animal handling, food, water and shelter, managing health issues such as flystrike, and requirements for shearing, dagging and crutching.

Sheep and beef cattle have been covered in a single code because they're usually farmed together and share many welfare needs.

Dairy cattle and deer are covered under different codes.
