Food traceability now essential symposium told

An international symposium in Wellington has been told there's an increasing need for New Zealand to come up with a national origin and traceability system for its food products.

GoTrace symposium chair, Dr Helen Darling, says there is a food scare somewhere in the world every day and New Zealand needs to protect itself.

Apart from the danger of contaminated products entering the food chain, she says, there's also a risk from fraudsters.

Dr Darling says New Zealand needs a systematic, nationwide approach to tracing products.
