Canterbury dairy farm fined for employment breaches

A dairy farm in Canterbury has been fined $7500 for breaches relating to employment contracts.

The Employment Relations Authority fined Viewbank Dairy near Rakaia after it failed to meet an improvement notice issued by the Ministry for Business, Innovation and Employment.

Labour Inspectorate southern regional manager Stuart Lumsden said several workers were on casual contracts and were being paid a lower holiday pay rate.

However, they should have been regarded as permanent staff and were entitled to be paid four weeks' holiday.

Mr Lumsden said Viewbank Dairy also failed to keep accurate employment records and made deductions for accommodation from the workers' pay without written evidence that was an agreement.

The farmer has been ordered to repay holiday money owed to the workers.
