Volunteers offer to help on flooded farms

6:03 am on 15 August 2008

About 100 volunteers have offered to help North Canterbury farmers clean up and repair damage from torrential rain and flooding two weeks ago.

Local Federated Farmers' president, Chris Sunstrum says about 80 farms in the Cheviot and Amberley areas have registered damage so far and the list is still growing.

He describes the response from volunteers and groups offering to help repair fencing and clear slips as overwhelming, but says they still need more help.

An application has been made to the Government for Task Force Green assistance.

Hurunui District Council says a wide range of people have volunteered so far, from retired farmers and periodic detention workers, to businesses on team building outings.

He expects a lot of the repair work to start this weekend.
