Porina grub destroys pasture in Wairarapa

A pasture-destroying pest has been adding to feed worries for farmers in Wairarapa where there have been an extremely wet spring.

Federated Farmers says the legacy of a dry autumn left many short of feed going into the spring.

Aggravating that, says Wairarapa meat and fibre chair Alan Stuart, has been the destruction caused by the grub of the porina moth, which, like the grass grub, can cause serious damage to pasture.

But he says a couple of days of sunshine and and warmer conditions have triggered an immediate improvement, with livestock picking up even in that short time.
