New cross-bred cow tipped to dominate herds

A new type of cow, the Kiwi Cross, is set to become the dominant breed in the New Zealand dairy industry.

That's the prediction of the livestock breeding and genetics company LIC.

Holstein-Friesians, Jerseys and Ayrshires have previously been the main-stay milk producers.

Breeding and genetics company LIC started cross-breeding of the three breeds in various combinations and introduced Kiwi Cross bulls to the industry four years ago.

Chief executive Stuart Dewdney says there will be more cross-breds in three - four years than any other breed.
