Recycling organisation to use grant money for research

A not-for-profit recycling organisation in rural Waikato is one of the recipients of a grant from the Government's new Waste Minimisation Fund.

Xtreme Waste was set up ten years ago, and on average, manages to prevent three quarters of the waste from Raglan ending up in a landfill.

Spokesperson Liz Stanway says the $21,000 Government grant will cover most of the cost of a feasibility study into the recovery of organic waste, specifically food waste.

She says they're investigating diverting the Raglan and Waingaroa region's organic waste and processing it into high quality compost.

The study will be completed by June next year, after which the organisation will decide whether to go ahead with a trial.
