About 500 jobs are expected to be created after the Government approved the country's largest offshore marine farm.

The 3,800ha mussel farm will be developed by Eastern Seafarms Ltd off Opotiki in the Bay of Plenty.

The Opotiki mayor John Forbes says the economic spin-offs will be huge, including a potential deal with Chinese investors to grow native sea-cucumber.
