A machine-washable woollen suit fabric developed by AgResearch has won an international award.

The fabric, which can also be put in the tumble drier, won the inaugural Product Innovation and Commercialisation Award announced this month at the Textile Institute World Conference in Hong Kong.

AgResearch textile science and technology section manager Peter Ingham says there has been a lot of interest from overseas in the fabric since it was unveiled last year.

Mills in China, India, South Korea, Japan and Mexico now use the technology to produce the fabric.

Mr Ingham says it is the first time AgResearch has won an award for lightweight fabric. Its previous awards have been mainly for carpet processing technology.
