Dismal prices for avocado exports

2:45 pm on 7 February 2012

Avocado growers in Bay of Plenty are looking at a very average season.

Picking for export is almost over, but with the biggest crop ever, Country Life reports prices have been dismal.

A lot of fruit went to Australia and four times as much as usual into Japan. But there was lots of late Australian fruit and the market there virtually collapsed for imports from New Zealand.

Returns will be about half what they normally are. Country Life reports some growers will have almost negative returns this year - with production costs out-stripping what they will be paid.
