New wheat varieties available soon

New Zealand wheat growers will have access to new high yielding and disease resistant wheat varieties this year, stemming from a cereal breeding programme that began in the 1990s.

Plant & Food Research and Luisetti Seeds at Rangiora have signed an agreement to renew and expand their breeding partnership.

It's been responsible for introducing cultivars that have improved the quality of milling wheat grown in New Zealand.

A Plant & Food says two new feed and milling wheats are due for release this year.

Arable crops business manager Ivan Lawrie says one suits direct drilling and the other is frost resistant.

He says the partnership also has a large feed barley programme, trialling and releasing new imported varieties.
