With one round to go, David Fagan is heading the list of contenders to represent New Zealand at the world shearing championships, to be held during the Golden Shears in Masterton at the end of the month.

Fagan, 50, the winner of five individual world titles and seven team titles, moved into top ranking after competing in the final points round at the Otago championships last weekend.

The top 12 now head for a shear-off at the Southern Shears in Gore this weekend.

The two top performers on the day will represent New Zealand in the machine shearing section of the world championships.

New Zealand wool handling champion Joanne Kumeroa is heading the contenders for that section, with protege Joel Henare close behind.
