Two Hawke's Bay shearers will represent New Zealand at the world shearing championships, to be held during the Golden Shears in Masterton, later this month.

It is an upset for David Fagan who was the favourite heading into the final shear-off, the Southern Shears, in Gore at the weekend.

Napier's John Kirkpatrick and Waipawa's Cam Ferguson, who is the current world title holder, beat 12 competitors to claim the two spots in the machine shearing section.

Woolhandlers Joanne Kumeroa of Whanganui, and Joel Henare of Gisborne were also selected to represent New Zealand at the world championships.

Qualifiers from about 25 countries will compete at the world shearing championships which begin on Wednesday 21 February.
