Possible return to wool marketing levy welcomed

Wool exporters have welcomed a call for farmers to consider contributing to wool marketing again.

But they're concerned that support might be limited to just one company.

Sheep and beef farmers have not funded wool marketing or promotion programmes since the demise of the former Wool Board.

Meat & Wool New Zealand says there's a strong argument to use some of the levy funds it gets from farmers to support limited market development for wool, along the same lines as it does for meat.

That's music to the ears of exporters, who have been urging farmers to join them in jointly funded wool promotion campaigns.

However, Wool Exporters executive manager Nick Nicholson is concerned about restrictions that might be attached to farmer funding. He would be pleased to work with them "dollar for dollar".
