World swimming record under threat tonight

7:21 am on 19 March 2012

Australia's hottest swimmer, James Magnusson says he's gunning for the world 100 metres freestyle record in tonight's final at the Australian Olympic trials in Adelaide.

After cruising to victory in the semi-finals last night and becoming the first man in the world this year to break the 48 second barrier, Magnussen is targetting the world record of 46.91 seconds.

That time was set by the Brazilian Cezar Cielo wearing a super suit at the farcical 2009 world championships in Rome.

Some said that mark would stand for 10 years, but Magnussen says he'll be going all out to lower it tonight.
