Sanya heading back to New Zealand

11:53 am on 23 March 2012

The Chinese entry Sanya has turned around and is heading back towards New Zealand after snapping its rudder and taking on water on the fifth leg of the Volvo Ocean race.

While they made their boat water-tight, they've decided to get more permanent repairs in New Zealand which could take them five days to reach.

It's another huge setback for their New Zealand skipper Mike Sanderson and his crew after suffering two previous mechanical issues on the race.

Team New Zealand's Camper is now at the head of the fleet.
