For the first time, blue skies have greeted the New Zealand and South African cricketers on day three of the final test against New Zealand in Wellington.

It's a clear, still day in the capital, but the tourists remain in a very strong position despite losing JP Duminy for 103 this morning to be 343 for three a short time ago in their first innings, nearing lunch at the Basin Reserve.

Alviro Petersen also reached his century, Petersen's now on 147 and the new man AB de Villiers is on 17.

South Africa lead the three-test series 1-0.
