The New Zealand cyclist Julian Dean is expected to leave a Spanish hospital tomorrow after having surgery on a leg he broke in a crash while riding the Tour of Catalunya last week.

The 36-year-old has had a couple of plates and screws inserted by the doctor that performed a similar operation on him when he broke his elbow in 2005.

On his website his wife Carole says Julian was up and about as soon as he was given the all clear and he could be home by tomorrow.

Dean is now expected to miss a ride in what would have been his 8th Tour de France this year and his participation in this year's Olympics is in doubt.
