Wellington swimmer Gareth Kean showed his class to dip under the qualifying time for the London Olympics on the second day of the State New Zealand championships in Auckland on Monday.
Kean topped the heats in the 100 metre backstroke, nearly a full second under the qualifying time for London in the championships that double as the official Olympic Trials.
His time was the fifth fastest time in the world this year.
Melissa Ingram set herself up for a crack at the qualifying time in the 100 backstroke after topping qualifiers in the heats.
The championships continue until Friday when the team for the London Olympics will be named.
