Pit stop huge blow to Team New Zealand's Volvo campaign

While the Volvo Ocean race leg leaders were passing the central waypoint in the Southern Ocean ice exclusion zone, Team New Zealand's Camper accepted they would have to make a brief pit stop in Chile for repairs to their bow.

Camper skipper Chris Nicholson, who pledged to complete leg five from Auckland in New Zealand to Itajaí in Brazil once the work is done, said their predicament had begun to snowball after repairs were needed to a forward bulkhead earlier in the leg.

He says it got to the point where they couldn't go on carrying out makeshift repairs.

Nicholson says they are heading to Puerto Montt in Chile where he estimates it will be three days of repairs before they get back on the water and head to Brazil.

Groupama sailing team are leading the way, 48 nautical miles ahead of PUMA, with Team Telefónica 120 nautical miles off the pace.
