The New Zealand sevens captain DJ Forbes says while they were disappointed to lose the Hong Kong final to a rampant Fiji, he was pleased with his relatively inexperienced side.

Fiji ran in five superb tries to New Zealand's four to win 35-28 and close the gap at the top of the World Series.

In reaching their fifth Cup final of the season New Zealand kept their lead at the top of the World Series on 111 points, but the Fijians have cut that lead to just two points.

DJ Forbes he's still pleased to have got some points out of it and says the side did well given Hong Kong was a first for some players.

Round seven of the Sevens World Series starts next weekend in Tokyo.

Fiji top pool A at the Prince Chichibu Memorial Ground but they face a tough trio of matches against England, France and hosts Japan.

New Zealand's fifth Cup final of the Series in Hong Kong and second straight runners-up result has the champions heading Pool B with matches against Australia, USA and Hong Kong.

Argentina were drawn top of Pool C and they will play Wales, Kenya and Russia.

South Africa, who finished third in Hong Kong, headed the draw in Pool D and will face Samoa, Scotland and Portugal.

New Zealand now lead the standings on 111, just two clear of Fiji on 109. South Africa are third, ahead of England and Samoa.
