Saudi Arabia not ready to send women to the Olympics

5:09 pm on 6 April 2012

The president of the Saudi Arabia Olympic Committee has ruled out sending women to this year's Olympics in London, leading to a call for their exclusion from the Games.

Prince Nawaf bin Faisal says his body hasn't endorsed any female participation at the moment.

The chief executive of the Women's Sport and Fitness Foundation, Sue Tibballs says the Saudi stance is unacceptable and they expect the International Olympic Committee to exclude Saudi Arabia.

Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Brunei have never had a woman compete for them at the Olympics.

The IOC said in a statement that they are still in discussion and working to ensure the participation of Saudi women at the Games in London.
