Wales rugby coach breaks both heels in fall

The Wales rugby coach, New Zealander Warren Gatland, will undergo surgery after fracturing both his heels in a ladder fall while working at his family beach house at Waihi Beach.

He was cleaning windows when he lost his balance and fell three metres onto concrete taking the full impact on his heels.

He is in leg casts and requires surgery to reconstruct his right heel.

Gatland's return to Wales has been delayed, although his injuries are not expected to have any major impact on the preparations for Wales scheduled international matches in June.

It could be several weeks before he fully recovers but he's expected to be able to return to active coaching duties before his recuperation is complete.
