Matfield contemplating a return to Springboks

3:42 pm on 20 April 2012

Speculation that South African rugby lock Victor Matfield will come out of retirement and lead his country in a three-Test June home series against England is growing.

Injuries to flankers Schalk Burger and Juan Smith, considered the main candidates to succeed retired hooker John Smit as skipper, have complicated the captaincy issue with the first Test less than two months away.

Initially dismissed as an April Fools joke orchestrated by the local media, the 34-year-old 110 test veteran who retirned after last year's World Cup says new Springbok coach Heyneke Meyer has asked him to consider a comeback and it's something he's considering.

South Africa host England in Durban in seven weeks.
