Formula one motor racing officials have reassured everyone involved with this weekend's Bahrain grand prix of their safety after a firebomb exploded near Force India team members and protesters clashed with police in the island nation.

The chairman of the Grand Prix Drivers Association, Pedro de la Rosa, said safety was "not a concern" despite political tensions in the kingdom.

The incident involving the Force India team members happened as they were returning from the Sakhir circuit to their hotel.

One team member has chosen to return home as a result of the blast.
