Defoe returns home after death of his father

The England striker Jermain Defoe has returned home from the Euro 2012 football championships after the death of his father.

Officials say Defoe will rejoin the squad in due course and there will be no replacement.

England arrived in Poland, co-hosts with Ukraine for the tournament, on Thursday.

The tournament starts Saturday morning, while England's first Group D match is against France in Donetsk on Tuesday morning.

Tottenham striker Defoe has 47 caps but has never played a full 90 minutes for England, earning instead a reputation as a match-changing super-substitute.
