Justin Gatlin beat fellow American sprinter Tyson Gay to win the 100 metres at the US Olympic trials in an eye-catching 9.80 seconds at the Olympic track and field trials in Eugene, Oregon on Monday.

Eight years after winning Olympic gold, two years after concluding a doping ban and coming back from hip surgery after nearly a year off the track, Gatlin secured his return to the Games and looks ready to take on the world's best in London.

Gay clocked 9.86 for second, the splashy sprint coming after LaShawn Merritt and Sanya Richards-Ross delivered the fastest 400 metres times of the year.

In the field, Reese Hoffa popped the longest shot put of the outdoor season to pace the always tough squad for the Games, the former world champion hitting a world-leading 22.00 metres on his third attempt.

Olympic medallists Stephanie Brown Trafton and Jenn Suhr also booked return trips to the Olympics in women's field events.
