The South African wicketkeeper Mark Boucher has retired from cricket after being hit in the eye by a bail and rushed to hospital with a lacerated eyeball.

Cricket South Africa confirmed the 35-year-old would be returning home ahead of the Proteas upcoming test series against England.

The South Africa captain Graeme Smith says Boucher's retirement has hit everyone hard.

Boucher played 147 tests and currently holds the world record for most test dismissals by a wicketkeeper with 555.
