Titans and Illawarra keep NRL top 8 hopes alive

6:14 am on 16 July 2012

Gold Coast Titans kept their National Rugby League finals hopes alive in blistering form yesterday, with an eight-try 38-26 flogging of the Canberra Raiders.

Needing a win to stay in touch with the top eight, the Titans all but wrapped up the match with five first-half tries to one.

They took a 22-4 halftime lead and were on their way to their biggest ever winning margin over the Raiders at 38-10 with six minutes left, before easing up.

Elsewhere St George Illawarra moved to within one win of the NRL top eight when they beat the Cronulla Sharks 18-10.

With the game completed in near darkness due to a power failure just before kick-off, the Dragons held on for just the second win from their past five games, Trent Merrin sealing victory with a try 13 minutes from time which appeared to feature a Matt Cooper knock-on in the lead-up.
