The Auckland discus thrower Siositina Hakeai has set a big personal best to finish fourth at the World Junior Championships in Barcelona, Spain.

Hakeai opened shakily with a foul and a throw of 47.50 metres but kept improving and finished with a massive 56.17 metre throw in the final round.

The throw added almost one metre to the New Zealand Women's age group record for 18 year olds, held by former world senior champion Beatrice Faumuina.

The Discus brought a close to the championships for the thirteen strong New Zealand team, which finished 18th on the medals table thanks to Jacko Gill's dominant victory in the Shot Put.
