The Warriors co-owner Eric Watson says the proposed upgrade of Mt Smart Stadium could begin as early as next year.

Watson and fellow co-owner Owen Glenn have announced a series of initiatives and investments into rugby league, and confirmed Mt Smart Stadium was the Warriors preferred venue for the future.

They want to increase the capacity of the stadium to at least 30,000 as soon as possible and complete a major upgrade of the training, recovery and hospitality facilities.

Watson says the Auckland mayor Len Brown is on the same page and Watson hopes work can begin at Mt Smart as soon as possible.

He says the fans want Mt Smart and so do they, and he's hoping work can begin next year on the upgrade.

Watson says his vision is to build a sports academy at Mt Smart and eventually increase the stadium capacity to more than 50,000 making it Auckland's premier sporting facility.
