Mike Hesson has been announced as the next coach of the New Zealand men's cricket team.

Hesson, who coached Otago for six years and had a recent brief stint with Kenya, takes over the Black Caps from the outgoing John Wright.

Hesson's first duties once the team arrive home from the West Indies will be next month's tour of India and September's Twenty20 World Cup.

Hesson's contract runs through until the end of 2015's one day World Cup.
